INT. BANK MANAGER’S OFFICE
MELODIE (30s) adjusts her hair tie while talking to the bank manager. The conversation is muted. The camera zooms in on a pill attached to her hair tie. She grabs the pill, holding it hidden in the palm of her hand.
She turns around away from the bank manager, and coughs. While coughing, she sneaks the pill into her mouth.
INT. BANK LOBBY
Three people in dark clothing stroll into the bank lobby. PHILLIP, (early 20s) looks unsettled and shifty as he walks into the lobby. HARMON (30s) watches him closely, and surveys the security. WYATT (20s) walks behind the two, in his own world. They are all equipped with hidden communication devices in their ears.
LEAH (O.S.)
The manager has a thing for Brunettes apparently. Melodie got the location. The payload is in the basement floor, room B09. Wyatt, gain access.
Wyatt nods, and he detaches the face of his watch. Inside are two pills. He grabs one, and swallows it.
The world around him sharpens. Like he can see for the first time.
WYATT’S THOUGHTS (O.S)
60 seconds.
Wyatt casually walks up to the nearest security guard.
WYATT’S THOUGHTS (O.S)
Pickpocketing is simple once you try it. All about misdirection.
Wyatt taps the guard’s shoulder. As the guard turns around, he notices a bulge in the guard’s inside jacket pocket, and the name tag “Bill”.
WYATT
(whispering)
I heard that guy in the bowler hat talk about robbing the bank.
Wyatt points behind the security guard. As the guard turns, Wyatt grabs the key card in the guard’s jacket pocket.
WYATT
(whispering)
He was mumbling something about taking hostages and a bomb he had.
Wyatt shrugs and grabs the guard’s radio.
WYATT
Don’t ask me.
BILL
Thanks for the warning sir.
The guard walks over to the man in the bowler hat.
WYATT’S THOUGHTS (O.S)
40 seconds.
Wyatt walks by the bank gift shop, and swipes a yellow bank hat. He puts on the hat. He looks back over at Phillip and Harmon and shrugs. Phillip snickers.
They get to the back of the bank, and stop behind a corner. On the other side is a door to the staircase with a guard in front.
WYATT
(over the radio, imitating Bill’s voice)
This is Bill, we have a bomber! The man in the bowler hat has a bomb! HE HAS A BOMB!
Wyatt watches as the guard in front of the staircase door runs to the main lobby of the bank. Phillip is impressed.
Wyatt walks quickly to the door and gets out the key card.
PHILLIP
You’re amazing man.
Wyatt pauses and looks at Phillip with appreciation.
WYATT
Thanks man.
Wyatt swipes the card and opens the door. Wyatt, Harmon, and Phillip start to run down the staircase.
WYATT’S THOUGHTS (O.S)
20.
LEAH (O.S.)
Great job Wyatt. The room should be on your immediate right as you exit the staircase.
The team continues running down.
WYATT’S THOUGHTS (O.S)
10.
Wyatt makes it to the basement first and opens the door to the hallway and turns right… only to be face to face with an extremely buff guard running toward the staircase.
LEAH (O.S.)
Hostiles!
WYATT
(Squealing)
Harmon!
The buff guard grabs Wyatt and pushes him to the ground. He grabs at his holster. Empty. Wyatt waves the gun, then slides it across the room. The guard reaches for his radio, but Wyatt has that too, and drops the batteries out of it! The room seems to blur for a moment, and then refocus, less vibrant than before.
WYATT’S THOUGHTS (O.S)
Out of juice.
The guard reaches for his baton, and this time grabs it. He holds it out and extends it, ready to strike…
Harmon tackles the guard sending them careening down the hall. They stumble back up. Harmon tries to wrestle the baton away from the guard, but the guard is stronger. He grabs one of Harmon’s wrists.
Harmon front flips over the guard while rotating his body. The guard still holds onto his arm, but Harmon has his legs in a choke hold around the guard’s neck.
Two other guards appear from around the corner and charge Harmon. Harmon holds the choke hold, waiting for the buff guard to pass out.
The buff guard finally passes out as the other guards are almost at Harmon. He immediately releases his hold and sweeps his legs, tripping the front guard.
Harmon grabs the baton from the passed out guard, and defeats both guards with precisely placed blows on vital areas of their bodies. Harmon defeats all the guards, and looks back at Wyatt and Phillip.
Phillip has his mouth open with shock. Wyatt runs over to Harmon and gives him a hug.
WYATT
I love you.
HARMON
(french accent)
Get ze hell off me. I still have juice. I could break you!
LEAH (O.S.)
Great job Harmon. Phillip, it’s your turn.
Phillip runs over to the door. Room B09. There’s a keypad on the wall. He brings out a laptop, detaches the keypad from the wall, and connects wires in the keypad to his laptop.
PHILLIP
Vanguard system 10.5. Powerful, but with a couple weeks of preparation, and a trojan horse coded up…
Phillip looks over at Harmon and Wyatt.
PHILLIP
It’s a piece of cake.
Phillip dramatically hits the “enter” key. He goes to open the door and…
It’s locked.
PHILLIP
Huh?
Phillip holds up the keypad hanging off the wall.
HARMON
What iz up? Did your nerd shit not work?
Phillip shakes the keypad around.
PHILLIP
No that’s impossible! I ran it a thousand times it-
Phillip dramatically drops the keypad, sighs, and puts his hands in his head.
PHILLIP
They updated it this morning, it’s Vanguard 10.6.
HARMON
What’s ze big deal? A single point one and your code is busted?
WYATT
You can’t try a different wire?
PHILLIP
It doesn’t work like that. Hackers are like magicians, we never do the same trick twice. Only for us, it’s because they always patch the exploit.
Melodie rounds the corner and runs into the team.
MELODIE
What’s taking so long, you’re supposed to have it already?
HARMON
Le bouffon isn’t good enough.
PHILLIP
It’s impossible! It would take weeks, analyzing data, coming up with designs. It can’t be done.
MELODIE
Well there’s always…
Melodie swallows as her throat dries. Harmon coughs, and looks at his shoes. Wyatt looks over at them, mouth open.
LEAH (O.S.)
Wyatt. Do you have an extra pill?
WYATT
No. No goddamn way.
PHILLIP
Pill?
LEAH
Yes or no Wyatt.
WYATT
No goddamn way Leah. He’s a kid. He’s a fucking kid.
PHILLIP
What’s happening?
LEAH (O.S.)
Harmon.
Harmon takes his shoe off. He digs at the sole.
WYATT
Leah he’s a contractor! I know this is for Bri but this crosses a line!
INT. VAN CONTINUED
Leah opens her mouth to speak, then pauses. She shakes her head.
LEAH
Phillip. What Harmon is about to hand you is a neuro-enhancing pill.
Wyatt groans off-screen. Leah sits in front of an array of computer screens showcasing the various security cameras across the bank. Behind her is BRI, in a hospital gown lying on a bed, sickly and barely conscious.
BRI
Leah no. Not like this.
LEAH
(ignoring Bri)
It will make you the best version of yourself, enhance your best traits into something not just world-class, but fucking supernatural.
BRI
(whimper)
Please don’t.
Bri closes her teary eyes.
INT. BANK BASEMENT CONTINUED
Harmon hobbles over to Phillip, shoe in hand, and presents the pill. Phillip looks confused, and a little excited.
LEAH (O.S.)
It only lasts 60 seconds. But damn, for those 60 seconds, you can do anything.
WYATT
(from the ground)
Phil don’t.
LEAH (O.S.)
Wyatt!
(frustrated exhale)
Stop talking. Now.
Harmon looks at Wyatt menacingly. Wyatt sighs with pain and closes his eyes. Melodie stares at the ground without emotion.
LEAH (O.S.)
Take the pill Phillip. You’ll become the best hacker in the world. And it won’t be close. Take the pill. Open the door.
Phillip holds the pill close to his eye with an expression close to awe.
PHILLIP
(intrigued)
Best in the world, huh.
Wyatt covers his ears.
PHILLIP
So that’s how you guys did all that.
Phillip smiles.
PHILLIP
Bottoms up!
Phillip tosses the pill in the air and catches it in his mouth.
The world sharpens around him. He picks up the laptop, and data flows out of it.
He digests it all, swarming around him, so much data that he should implode. And yet, it’s all perfectly clear.
PHILLIP
The update protects against Trojan horses by rejecting the bad, weird inputs. 20 digits, 2 digits. Ones that can’t be the code.
Phillip switches some wires around in the keypad.
PHILLIP
But fuck around with the wires, and you can make it reject everything, everything except the digits that are right.
Phillip types on his computer, coding a script to test codes. He emphatically presses “enter”.
The keypad flashes red through combinations. 24. 247. 2479, etc.
The keypad flashes green. The door pops open.
PHILLIP
Oh my god, I just did that!
He runs to Harmon with his hand up trying to give a high five, but Harmon brushes past him into the room. Melodie pats him on the back, but doesn’t look him in the eye.
MELODIE
(hoarse)
Good job kid.
He runs up to Wyatt and offers another high five, but Wyatt is still looking down at the floor.
PHILLIP
What’s your problem man? I just bossed the fuck out of tha-
Phillip’s eyes roll back in his skull. He falls to the ground, convulsing.
Wyatt slowly opens his eyes to see foam coming out of Phillip’s mouth.
LEAH (O.S.)
The package should be in one of the drawers in the office.
Harmon ruffles around the drawer until he finds it.
HARMON
Got it. One immunity shot from the side effects of the pill.
LEAH (O.S.)
Great work Harmon. Each of you, follow your assigned exit strategy now.
Harmon runs out of the room to Melodie, and sees Wyatt next to Phillip on the ground. He stops.
HARMON
We had no choice Wyatt. Bri will die.
Wyatt looks at him. He takes out the guard’s radio.
WYATT
(over the radio)
Attention, international thief speaking. I’m currently robbing your bank. I’m in front of Room B09, there’s a guy needing medical attention here.
HARMON
Sacré bleu!
MELODIE
Shit!
Harmon and Melodie run down the hall.
WYATT
(over the radio)
Seems to be suffering from some type of seizure, rabies maybe. I Don’t blame Bill, just tell him to put his key card on a lanyard. International thief out.
LEAH (O.S.)
You goddamn idiot. Just get to your extraction point.
Wyatt starts running, the opposite way Harmon and Melodie did. Sounds of a fight echo from that direction. A guard runs into the hallway, sees Wyatt, and runs after him.
Wyatt opens the face of his watch. One pill left. He picks the pill out of the watch, but it slips out of his fingers. It falls onto the floor.
Wyatt reaches down to grab the bouncing pill, only to fall on his face. His nose starts bleeding. The pill bounces under the door of an office room.
WYATT
NO! no no no no no!
Wyatt winces before he tries to open the door. The guard’s getting closer.
Click. The door opens!
LEAH (O.S.)
(angry)
Where are you going Wyatt?
Wyatt’s eyes widen. He walks in the room and locks the door, turns on the lights; it’s the office kitchen. He scans the floor for the pill. He finds it!
LEAH (O.S.)
Get the fuck out of there?!
Wyatt relaxes. He leans forward to pick it up, but a Roomba sweeps over it!
WYATT
NO! No no no no!
LEAH (O.S.)
Why not?!
Wyatt picks up the Roomba. Nothing under it. He sits down and tries to open the trash compartment. It’s jammed. He hears the echo of footsteps. He looks back toward the door.
LEAH (O.S.)
Hostiles are approaching! Climb through a fucking vent! What are you doing?
Click! Years of Roomba collected trash fall out onto the floor.
WYATT
I’m finding my damn pill!
BANG, BANG, BANG! The guard’s arrived. Wyatt rummages through the trash, making quick frantic glances at the door. The banging turns to even louder kicks. He’s got it!
WYATT
YES!
LEAH (O.S.)
Don’t take it. No version of you can get out of this.
Wyatt’s eyebrows crunch as he wonders whether he can trust her. Another blow lands on the door. It looks bent. Wyatt’s eyes glance to the vent above the office.
LEAH (O.S.)
Listen, I know you just went a little AWOL. But I get why. You know that. And I never abandon my people. You KNOW that. That pill will not help you now.
Wyatt stands up and wipes some trash off the pill. Another kick on the door, it’s hanging on by a thread. Wyatt walks toward the vent.
LEAH (O.S.)
Listen to me you idiot! I took my pill 10 seconds ago, I’m juiced. I can analyze the situation much better than you can. Put the pill in your sock, and get taken into custody.
Wyatt looks at the pill, salivating at the thought of taking it. He looks back at the door.
BRI (O.S.)
(shouting distantly)
Don’t!
INT. VAN CONTINUED
Bri is wide awake, pushing herself up on her bed.
Leah turns her head, and meets Bri’s eyes.
LEAH
I’m helping you.
Bri collapses back to her bed.
INT. OFFICE KITCHEN CONT.
Wyatt pauses and his expression becomes serious. He takes the pill.
WYATT
Sorry Leah.
Wyatt removes his earpiece, and enters the vent.
INT. VAN CONTINUED
LEAH
Wyatt?! Don’t take it! You can’t-
Leah slams her hands down on her keyboard. She turns to Bri. She opens her mouth to speak, but cuts herself off. She shakes her head and turns back to the computer.
LEAH
Harmon, Melodie. You’re at your exit. Be on lookout for Wyatt. He could be coming for the shot.
INT. TRASH ROOM CONT.
Harmon and Melodie peer a corner around to the door labeled “EXIT”. There’s one young guard standing in front.
HARMON
The idiot.
The world blurs and loses its color.
HARMON
I’m out. No more pills either.
MELODIE
I’ve got a little left. Look scared.
Melodie takes off her jacket, and cradles it in her arms. Then, she screams and runs around the corner to the guard.
Harmon, shocked, follows suit.
MELODIE
PLEASE HELP US!!
The guard puts his hand at his gun, then notices Melodie’s arms.
Melodie opens the side of her mouth, and starts to throw her voice. She perfectly mimics the sound of a baby crying, making it seem like it’s coming from her arms.
MELODIE
PLEASE THEY’RE RIGHT BEHIND US!
The guard looks at the hallway, looking concerned but slightly suspicious. He leans forward to look at what’s in Melodie’s arms.
Suddenly the baby starts crying much louder, and Melodie brings it to her chest to calm it down.
MELODIE
(To her arms)
You’re gonna be okay, you’re gonna be okay.
The young guard’s eyes soften as he believes them. He takes out his gun.
YOUNG GUARD
Stand behind me.
(Yelling)
COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS UP.
The guard slowly inches to the corner, his hands shaking. He quickly rounds it.
YOUNG GUARD
FREEZE!!!
He sees nothing but the unconscious bodies of other security guards. He whips around. Melodie and Harmon are gone.
EXT. PARKING LOT CONT.
Melodie and Harmon run through the front parking lot from the left side to the right, where the van is parked. Bank alarms are blaring. Several empty cop cars pepper the parking lot. At the entrance, Phillip is being carried out in a stretcher.
MELODIE
I’m out. No more pills.
LEAH (O.S.)
Dammnit! I’m losing vision!
INT. VAN CONT.
Leah’s camera’s cut to static, one by one. The whole grid fills with static.
LEAH
WYATT!!!!!
She shakes with anger. She turns around to Bri, whose eyes are closed. Leah softly holds Bri’s hand. With what little strength she has, Bri balls her hand into a fist.
HARMON (O.S.)
Bordel de merde!
LEAH
What’s happening?
EXT. PARKING LOT CONT.
MELODIE
There’s an evacuation of the bank! But they’re all wearing yellow hats.
Dozens of customers are evacuating the bank and spilling into the parking lot, the majority of which wear a yellow bank hat.
LEAH (O.S.)
Shit, Wyatt could be any one of them! Avoid them at all costs.
The crowd of humanity swells out of the entrance into the entire lot. They run into and around Harmon and Melodie, who push their way through the crowd. Phillip is being loaded into a sitting ambulance.
HARMON
We’re having to push through!
INT. VAN CONT.
Leah paces around the van.
LEAH
He could pickpocket you, steal the shot. He needs the shot. He needs it.
The world blurs and loses it color. Leah rushes to her dusk, her hands fumbling around her desk lamp.
Under the hood of the lamp, there are three pills. Bri’s eyes flutter open as Leah takes a pill from her stash.
LEAH
(Under her breath)
Shit shit.
Leah swallows the pill and heads to the back of the van.
LEAH
I’ll ID him from here.
Leah opens the back doors of the van, and scans the crowd. The world gains color, and focuses itself. The crowd of evacuees swells around Harmon and Melodie, but none of them seem to be Wyatt. Leah gasps as she realizes.
LEAH
He’s-
PRRR! The van suddenly accelerates forward. Leah is thrown from the back and lands on the ground.
LEAH
Fucking WYATT!
Behind the wheel of the van is Wyatt.
WYATT
WOOHOO!!! Hey BRI!
BRI
(mumbling)
Heyyyy girl.
Wyatt speeds the van over a curb. Bri jumps in her bed and groans.
WYATT
That’s my freebie!
Wyatt hops another curb. Bri grunts unpleasantly.
WYATT
Sorry Bri I’ll take the blame there.
Wyatt slows the car down to a stop at the edge of the parking lot and surveys the scene.
WYATT
Geez haha. You want a hat too Bri? I got a couple extra.
Wyatt puts a bank hat from his jacket pocket on Bri’s head.
Wyatt’s world blurs and loses its color.
WYATT
(grunts)
No pills though. Do you have any?
BRI
(grunting)
Nah. Look.
Bri points with her eyes at Leah’s lamp. Wyatt nods and smiles.
WYATT
You’re coming in clutch here Bri!
Bri smiles, but it’s filled with pain. Wyatt finds the stash and grabs a pill. Bri leans forward, as her pain seems to multiply tenfold.
BRI
Just don’t let that kid die. Not for me.
Wyatt nods, as if he’s sobering up.
WYATT
Look, that shit wasn’t right. We shouldn’t have done that to Phil. But you only got a couple of hours left. You need that shot.
BRI
(shakes her head)
He’s not worth more than me. I couldn’t live with it.
Wyatt nods. He walks to the drivers seat. He throws his pill in the air, and catches it in his mouth.
An ambulance comes squealing by, and exits the bank parking lot right next to the van.
WYATT
Shit Bri. I think that’s our boy.
A green car comes accelerating down the parking lot, straight to the van. Behind the wheel, sits Leah, next to Harmon and Melodie. Wyatt squeals.
WYATT
And that’s our ops!
Wyatt puts the pedal to the metal and chases after the ambulance.
Behind him, the green car chases down the van.
INT. GREEN CAR CONT.
Leah sits in the drivers seat, with Melodie in the passenger and Harmon in the back. Leah speeds through the city, turning without losing speed, chasing Wyatt, Harmon gets pushed to the side of the window.
HARMON
Madame slow down!
Melodie screams as Wyatt’s van begins to break. Leah swerves to the side and attempts to pull off a PIT maneuver on Wyatt’s van. Wyatt speeds back up and avoids Leah’s car.
LEAH
Shut the fuck up! It’s simple, just crash their van and give Bri the shot.
INT. VAN CONT.
Wyatt looks back at Leah’s car and laughs.
WYATT
Okay it’s simple, just gotta steal their shot, crash the ambulance, and give it to Phillip.
Bri mumbles incoherently.
WYATT
You’re not looking too good Bri.
(sighs and loses his smile)
Shit you’re a stubborn ass idiot.
Wyatt speeds up again chasing after the ambulance. He looks out his window and gets an idea. He steers the car closer to the left side of the road, then climbs out of the window, steering with his feet. He grabs a flag from its post hanging over the road, and throws it back at Leah’s car.
INT. VAN CONT.
Melodie and Harmon scream as the flag covers the car’s front window. It’s stuck in the windshield wipers and isn’t coming off.
MELODIE
You’re BLIND!
HARMON
You’re BLIND!!!
Leah attempts to roll down her drivers side window, it’s jammed. Time stops as she visualizes the surrounding road. And then the path of the ambulance. She suddenly turns the car left, sticking to Wyatt’s van.
MELODIE
How’d you know to turn!?!?
LEAH
It’s the shortest path to the hospital. Melodie, get the flag off. Harmon, lean out and tell me what’s happening.
Melodie and Harmon both lean out of the right side of the car. Melodie begins to pull at the flag. Harmon’s right hand holds the shot. Wyatt’s van abandons the ambulance and drives through a fence and into the park.
HARMON
He’s going straight he’s going straight! But stop, it’s a park!
Leah’s face is determined. She guns it faster than before through the fence, jolting Melodie and Harmon. Harmon yells as he almost drops the shot, and Melodie ducks back inside.
MELODIE
What the hell!!!
The van plows over an empty picnic table, and swerves around a tree. The ambulance drives along a road behind the park in the same direction.
HARMON
That psychopath!
Leah visualizes the surrounding park, and uses the sound of the van ahead to continue following it. They near the edge of the park, and the ambulance is ahead of them now, turning toward the where the van is about to exit from the park. Suddenly Wyatt jumps from the van to the top of the green car.
HARMON
AHHHHHHH WYATT!
The van still drives ahead, plowing through the fence and crashing into the building ahead. Wyatt crawls over the top of the van and steals the shot out of Harmon’s hand.
Leah drives forward and crashes into the van. CRASH! Wyatt is sent flying forwards next to the crashed van, while still holding the shot.
The ambulance breaks, but not fast enough. It rams into the van and the green car. CRASH!
The world blurs and loses its color. It pauses. Wreckage litters the city street. It’s peaceful.
INT. VAN CONTINUED
The contents of the van are in disarray. Bri’s bed is overturned. She lies on the ground. Next to her, Leah’s lamp is shattered. The last remaining pill lies on the ground.
Outside, shouting can be heard. Vague sounds of conflict. Bri opens her eyes. She looks sad. She looks angry. Bri’s eyes lock on the pill lying next to her. Bri slowly extends her arm, and takes the pill.
EXT STREET MOMENTS LATER
Wyatt and Harmon both hold onto the shot, each pulling on it. They’re exhausted, and off the pill. Neither is doing much. Leah stands by holding a piece of wreckage, looking like she’s about to join in. Melodie sits on the ground, looking dazed.
LEAH
Give up the shot Wyatt. It’s over. We’re not letting Bri die.
BRI
It’s not your choice.
Bri walks out of the van. Leah is shocked.
LEAH
You took a pill?
Bri nods. Leah runs over to Wyatt and rips the shot out of his hands. Bri opens the door to the ambulance. And sits next to Phillip. Leah walks in and sits on her knees.
LEAH
I’m begging you. Please take it. You have seconds left.
Bri shakes her head. She studies Phillip’s unconscious body.
LEAH
I can’t lose you. We have more people we can force you to-
BRI
Look at him Leah. What do you see?
LEAH
(swallows)
An acceptable loss.
BRI
I see how he cares for his younger brother. I see his kindness. I see his ego.
(caresses his face)
That’s what the pill lets me see. I’m not worth more than him Leah.
Bri turns to Leah and holds her hand. She smiles as she looks into Leah’s eyes.
BRI
We had a good run. We made good memories. We were good people. I’m not going to ruin that.
Leah falls into Bri’s eyes. She understands. Leah begins to sob. Bri takes the shot from Leah. She injects it into Phillip’s arm.
Bri turns back to Leah and hugs her. Leah sobs into her. They separate. Bri turns to Harmon, Melodie, and Wyatt, standing outside the ambulance.
BRI
Thank you guys. Have a great life.
Harmon and Melodie nod sadly. Wyatt nods with understanding.
Bri turns back to Leah, and looks in her eyes.
BRI
Goodbye Leah.
LEAH
(choked up)
Bye Bri
They kiss.
Bri collapses to the floor of the street.
THE END:
